The Air exchange has two air inlet
sources, red arrows show the
upstairs
air return duct on the left, and the downstairs floor return is to the right. Note
the black soot residue still remains on the "cleaned" condenser, as
smaller particle size materials easily passed through the condenser filter.
Because of the high levels of unexplained dust in the home, we switched
from spun fiberglass filters to a washable Electrostatic type filter. We were later advised this type filter
was not ideal for the extraordinary levels of contamination, and switched
to 3M Filtrete type filters.

Pictured: Electric heating coils located behind and above the heat pump’s fan and condenser. When energized, these coils produced sufficient heat to burn the cellulose particles, causing the gradual production of soot and low level CO. The coils become energized only when the heat pump system needed support for heating on colder days and nights (30s and below), or when the unit was in a defrost cycle. Soot and CO production varied with the weather, making the cause difficult to detect. After a burning cycle, residual soot would continue for some time, as contamination was spread throughout the HVAC system and home. |
